High School (Grades 9-12)

The High School program at AISV is specially designed to connect, inspire, and empower adolescents by meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. It offers a developmentally appropriate college preparatory curriculum. It is designed to encourage high academic standards and active learning through a standards-based, inquiry-driven approach. In the 9th and 10th grades, students are prepared for the rigor of the IB program through a focus on conceptual learning, the development of transferable skills, and the completion of projects, explorations, and summative assessments. Our program prepares students for further studies, whether they transfer to a high school in the UK, the USA, or other international high schools or universities. The high school program empowers students by developing strong Approaches to Learning skills and promoting the IB profile learner traits. The curriculum is inclusive for students of all nationalities and ability levels. Students with educational needs are supported through in-class differentiation and, when needed, with additional help from our English as an Additional Language and Inclusive Education teachers.

Academic

In addition to the subject-specific content and skills, the students are explicitly taught and assessed on the Approaches to Learning (ATL), which are deliberate strategies, skills, and attitudes identified in the IB program to help students learn how to learn. Attention to thinking skills, communication skills, social skills, self-management skills, and research skills throughout the program at AISV helps students and staff speak the same language and prepare students for the IB Diploma Program and lifelong learning.

In high school, students are assessed on subject-specific learning standards and objectives. External assessments such as the MAP, PSAT, SAT, and IB examinations prepare students for university admission and applications.

AISV Community Life

AISV Community Life is an integral and developmentally appropriate part of the Educational Program for the high school at AISV that follows a developed curriculum, ensures that at least one adult in the school gets to know each student well, and ensures that student’s learning needs are being met and feel encouraged to make good academic choices and plans for their future. It is also a time when students learn responsible citizenship, increase awareness of the world around them, and develop a sense of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-reliance, among many other things.

Students are also involved in community service experiences and projects that enable them to develop appreciation, respect, and a sense of responsibility for the environment, build relationships, respond to others’ needs, and enhance appreciation and respect for different cultures. Some examples of AISV High School student service projects include co-coaching and tutoring, helping at international events, and drives and donations to charity organizations.
